Disc Spot News

Disc Golf Clinic:  For starters, I just want to thank everyone who attended the last clinic. Because of you, we will be able to continue to add to Tulsa's arsenol of courses. The next clinic will be held Nov. 2 (tuesday) at Riverside Park (41st & Riverside) at 5:00p. We have two guest intructors this time: Carrie Berlogar from California (3rd place, Open Women, 2004 Worlds) and Courntey Peavy from Georgia (11th place, Open Women, 2004 Worlds). This one is not just for women, men are welcome as well. These ladies are both very skilled, and we could all learn from them, myself included! The cost is still only a $5 donation, so come out and support the local scene, add to your course list, gain some experience, and show Carrie and Courtney our appreciation for their time.

Disc Golf Clinic: The Clinic will begin October 23 (Saturday) 2:00 at Copperhead Canyon. Future lessons, dates to be announced, will be taught by Sam Neilson, Jose Mendoza, as well as Kevin McCoy. The clinic will cost $5 and that money will help buy baskets, improve, and add to Tulsa's courses. So bring your friends and I will see you there! If you are interested in taking this class please respond in person at The Disc Spot, or write or send your emails to The Disc Spot 5143 S. Peoria Tulsa, OK 74105, info@discspot.com. Please include your name, email, phone number, and any other details; such as: age, experience, etc. Don’t miss your chance to be taught by a pro!

What's New?: There are a few discs that have come out recently. Discraft has just introduced the Z FLICK, which is definitely one of the fastest and most stable discs on the market. They also have a prototype of a under-stable mid-range; which was introduce at the Discraft Ace Race. Ching has also come back on the scene with a unique putt & approach disc called the JUJU, formerly the MOJO.

Tulsa Area Courses: Disc golf is nothing new to Tulsa, but there are still many out there that do not even know what the sport is. In order for disc golf to become recognized as a professionally competitive sport; we, disc golf enthusiasts, must promote it every chance we get. As more people come to know about and enjoy the game, there will be more room for new courses and current course improvement. Tulsa's youngest course, Copperhead Canyon, could one day bring major A-tier and possibly world-class events; like the Worlds or USDGC. But Copperhead is nowhere near finished. It needs a few more baskets and general grounds improvement. With your help we can make this dream a reality. Attend local minis, sign up for the Disc Golf Clinic, or show support through donation. Donations can be made through The Disc Spot, Tulsa Disc Sport Association (http://www.tulsadiscsports.org), or directly to, course designer, Kevin McCoy (ninafofitre@yahoo.com). Lets make sure disc sports are a mainstay in Tulsa!

New Discs: The latest discs from Innova are the Champ Orc, Super Roc, and a range of Champ mid ranges and putters. The Orc is a stable distance driver that may set a new distance record. The Super Roc is a limited edition run of the old Special Edition Roc (stable mid range). Discraft has the Z Flash, Z Crush, Z Buzz, Z Breeze, and the Z Wasp. The Flash and the Crush are changing the game with their speed and distance capabilities.

Disc Golf Capitol of the Universe: With its multiple surrounding courses, and brotherly organization, Tulsa is definitely a Mecca for disc golfers. Tulsa and its suburbs, including Sand Springs, Broken Arrow, and Sperry, boast 11 courses ranging in difficulty. Courses like Chandler, Riverside, Reed, and Westport are perfect for the casual beginner. While courses like McClure, Ray Brown, and Mack Taylor cater to the more advanced player. But, Tulsa’s premiere courses are Copper Head Canyon, Hunter, Haikey Creek, and Dovillio. Each course, no matter the difficulty, is entirely different than the next, giving the local player or traveling visitor a course to match any skill or taste. Just look out for the wind...SHE IS EVERYWHERE! Tulsa also hosts one of the best, if not the best, organizations in the country. If you don’t believe that, then just take a look at the PDGA DISCussion board, the TDSA currently has 5,099 posts. That is more than 4,500 post more than the next highest organization. The Tulsa Disc Golf Association merged with the Indian Territory Frisbee Disc Club (est. 1976) in 1986 to form the Tulsa Disc Sport Association. The TDSA, its participants, and members have made Tulsa one of the centers for disc golf in America. Tulsa’s first course was Riverside, built in 1979 with the help of the late “Steady” Ed Hedrick. He was the inventor of disc golf and owner of the Disc Golf Association, one of the foremost manufacturers of discs and disc golf hardware. Now Tulsa boasts enough courses to rival any major city, but it’s up to you to ensure the longevity of the sport and its stay in Tulsa.

Tulsa's Newset Courses: Tulsa has recently added to its arsenal of courses; Ray Brown in Sand Springs and Copperhead Canyon in West Tulsa. Ray Brown was designed and installed by Jose Mendoza with the help of Kevin McCoy and David “Zuc” Zucconi, to name a few. It is a tight, challenging, intermediate 9 hole including alternate tee pads and some water and tree hazards. Copperhead Canyon, designed and installed by Kevin McCoy with the help of others, is by far Tulsa’s most difficult pro course. If you have not tried these courses yet, you better hurry. Copperhead will be closed thru the summer but Ray Brown will be open year round. For more information contact Kevin McCoy at (918) 740-9846 or Jose Mendoza at (918) 636-5673.
